Hey guys–I just wanted to let you all know that, among the African immigrant population, it’s really common to take care of other people from your country like they’re family–it’s just that family is usually a pretty wide circle of people. It’s part of being alone and away from your family and culture, as well as reflecting the value of taking care of extended family among Africans. I’ve had African immigrant friends who have very wide support networks of others from their country without necessarily knowing details like last names. So this story isn’t as suspect as it sounds–the guy did probably just think he was helping out a friend.
