OMG you are too freaking funny!! I can relate! I went to my first trip, well first in 10 years, with SIL-BIL and their kids,MIL and my DD 10 a couple years ago. Found out quick NOT to do that again! SIL and BIL were complaining on the prices of everything. Their kids were 3 and 6 and they were afraid of the characters. They wanted to avoid them and walk around them, my DD wanted to see them and get autographs. They went to Dumbo and tea cups, DD wanted space mountain and the big kid rides. Poor poor MIL wanted to be with all the kids, but couldn't. We finally split- me and DD one way and all of them another. That is when me and DD had a blast and really enjoyed it. Ended up that trip created future mother-daughter trips! Now we have been back 6 times in 3 years, just as mother-daughter. We have a blast and it is sooo nice to have no one to worry about but us.

We brought MIL on one trip alone, we had fun. Great trip. She is so easy, and goes out of her way to just go along with us and not care about details. She just enjoyed it. It wasn't the same as just me and DD, but it was soo fun!

Unless you have someone easy like my MIL. Leave em home LOL!

We don't speak to my in-laws. DH's choice. I simply support his wishes.
Twice now, I have attempted to plan trips with my parents. Twice now, it has fallen apart. I now realize how good this is, and will not attempt this again. Understanding that we have different views on life in general in this case means that I have to face the fact that getting along for even a short trip is not very likely.
I remember good trips with family when I was young, but it is what it is.
My acceptance of this is making it much easier for DH to be supportive! :)

Hi Regina! The exact same thing happened in our family. Only a few months after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather remarried and became totally immersed in her kids' lives and we were all pushed out of the way. The other woman has since passed away and my grandfather is very sick but now his step children are the ones left to take care of him since he had rejected all of us. So I guess what comes around goes around. Thanks so much for sharing your story, it was totally hysterical!!

Ha- thats what keeps us going isn't it though? We don't always remeber every detail of the pretty good moments in our lives, but the great stories we get out of some of the knuckle-heads in our lives go on forever right? "The crazy lady era"- Ha!

Thanks Jamie, but as you can see, we do have some "fun" memories. You focus on the good and learn a lesson from the not so good.

He was a great Dad, very involved in his son's lives. While it is sad that things changed later on, again, there are ample good times to recall. (And some doozey tales about the crazy lady era.)

Regina I am sorry to hear your father in law was led to in some ways ignore your family. That is sad. I am sure that hurt your husband quite a bit.
